Lichen on bark (Flavoparmelia rutidota)

Graphite on paper 2008

A fine blue/green lichen grows on the old pine trees that grow around my property. In this drawing I decided to draw a close up portrait of a small part of the lichen on a piece of bark. Magnified, the lichen takes on a new persona and to me resembled underwater corals in a tropical sea. A casual glance at this relatively common lichen shows nothing of the three-dimensional detail and beauty of what is actually there.
