Hakea sp. (Nut)

Hakea sp. (Nut)

Watercolour 2008

I love the shapes and textures of the nuts and seed pods on Australian plants. They have a sculptural quality and drama in their appearance.

This particular nut I found alongside a small stream beside which I and other remote area fire-fighters were waiting for a helicopter. I am a volunteer fire-fighter and our crew was in a remote area of dense bush fighting what was known as the Brogo Complex Fire near Bega, and were waiting for a helicopter to winch us out. A lovely little hakea was near our extraction point and I picked this nut up from the ground just before we were air-lifted out.
