Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis)

Watercolour 2009

Until I decided to paint some asparagus, I was not aware of the rich colours contained in the stalks of this vegetable. The long slender stems with the fine bracts along their length were challenging to paint so that they maintained their interest. It was fun to see how the colours could be drawn out of the stems and bracts as the painting progressed and took shape. Using a dry brush technique and a very fine brush gave me the opportunity to build the layers of colour which helped enhance the final form of the painting.
