Let the whiteness of bones atone to forgetfulness
Watercolour and graphite
16 x 11cm
The delicate and exquisitely coloured serrations on this young fern frond, although so very soft, echo the brittle teeth on this disintegrating jaw bone. One so delicate, one so tough.
The fern, Blechnum cartilagineum, also called the Gristle Fern or Soft Water Fern, grows at the Australian National Botanic Gardens. It is a resilient and abundant fern growing in eastern Australia. And is seen in rainforest and eucalyptus forest. New growth is often pink or reddish in colour. It is very tolerant of dry conditions once established in a shady area.
